What's genuinely hard
- Nasal vowels (vin/vent/son) and the u vs. ou contrast, both in minimal pairs
- Silent final letters and liaison: words run together in speech
- Noun gender (le/la) affects articles and adjectives
- Spoken French sounds very different from how it's written
Tips
- Learn phrases as whole sound-chunks, not word-by-word. Liaison makes the chunk the real unit
- Vous (formal) everywhere is always polite; tu comes later with friends
